Germany is coming under growing pressure to reconsider its steadfast support for Israel as debates intensify over the ongoing Gaza war. Critics argue that Israel’s military response has become disproportionate, leaving no end to the humanitarian crisis in sight. European allies and international observers are increasingly urging Berlin to take a firmer stance, including sanctions against Israel, despite Germany’s historic commitment to the Jewish state.
Historically, Germany has maintained unwavering support for Israel to atone for the Holocaust. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel described Israel’s security as a core state interest, but recent voices, including former adviser Christoph Heusgen, have suggested reassessing this policy. Heusgen warned that continued Israeli actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank risk creating an “apartheid state” and called for Germany to recognize a Palestinian state.

Public opinion in Germany has also begun shifting. Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have grown significantly in Berlin, with tens of thousands marching recently to demand an end to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Polls indicate that 76 percent of Germans view Israel’s military actions as unjustified, while 62 percent believe these actions constitute genocide, reflecting heightened public concern over civilian suffering.
The German government has taken limited steps, including restricting weapons sales to Israel, a decision welcomed by left-leaning groups but criticized by conservative factions such as the CSU. Analysts say Germany must carefully balance its historical obligations toward Israel with international law and humanitarian responsibility, especially as EU partners weigh sanctions and trade restrictions.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has confirmed that Germany will present its stance on potential EU sanctions during an upcoming council meeting in Copenhagen on October 1. Meanwhile, critics and historians emphasize that Germany should act decisively to prevent further civilian casualties in Gaza and uphold global humanitarian standards.
