The United Kingdom has officially upgraded the Palestinian mission in London to the status of an embassy. This move follows Britain’s decision to recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. A formal ceremony was conducted outside the embassy building on Monday. The Palestinian flag was raised during the event, marking a powerful symbol of international support. The upgrade comes alongside similar recognitions by Canada and Australia.
Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Dr. Husam Zomlot, led the ceremony and addressed the attendees. He explained the meaning behind the Palestinian flag’s colours. Black stands for mourning, white for hope, green for the land, and red for sacrifice. He called the moment historic and said it reflected a shared global commitment to justice and dignity. Zomlot also praised Britain’s role in advancing Palestinian statehood.

During his speech, Zomlot described the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. He said people in Gaza face bombings, hunger, and destruction. He also accused Israel of committing ethnic cleansing and state violence in the West Bank. Zomlot stressed that Palestinians continue to lose land and live under constant threat. He urged the world to treat Palestinians with equal human dignity.
The ambassador criticised the silence of some world powers regarding what he described as genocide. He said the recognition came at a time of deep pain for Palestinians. Zomlot warned that their basic human rights are still being denied. He asked the international community to take meaningful action beyond symbolic gestures. He called for justice, peace, and full statehood for Palestine.

In closing, Zomlot said the Palestinian flag was raised as a promise to future generations. He said Palestine will survive, rise, and become free. The embassy upgrade signals a growing shift in global opinion. More countries are now supporting a two-state solution. The move also highlights the widening divide between Israel and its traditional allies over the Palestinian issue.
