Heavy rains have continued to batter Karachi since early Tuesday morning, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasting more downpours until Wednesday. Areas like Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nazimabad, and North Karachi experienced moderate to heavy showers. Light rain brought relief to Defence, Malir, Landhi, and Korangi, making the weather pleasant amid the monsoon season.
The PMD has issued a warning for over 100mm of rainfall and alerted residents about the risk of urban flooding in Karachi. According to the Met Office, a weakened depression over central Sindh is driving strong monsoon currents across the province. Widespread heavy rains, gusty winds, and isolated extreme downpours are expected in Karachi and several other districts including Hyderabad, Dadu, and Thatta.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab assured that major roads remain clear and KMC teams are actively working on drainage clearance. He urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to reduce traffic congestion and help emergency services operate efficiently. Despite these efforts, residents have reported power outages and water accumulation causing traffic jams in some neighborhoods.
In Hyderabad and Thatta, persistent rains have submerged many low-lying areas, worsening conditions for flood victims. Power disruptions continue, and local authorities have closed schools in Hyderabad as a precaution. Drainage systems in Thatta are overwhelmed, leading to increased waterlogging and hardship for affected communities.
The ongoing heavy rainfall highlights the challenges Karachi and Sindh face during monsoon season. Authorities emphasize the need for vigilance, improved drainage management, and public cooperation to minimize flood impacts and ensure safety in vulnerable areas.
