Published on: August 22, 2025 5:45 AM

Tarbela Dam reached its maximum conservation level of 1550 feet above mean sea level on Thursday, with 5.728 million-acre feet live water storage in the reservoir.

Filling of Tarbela Dam to its maximum conservation level is a good sign for irrigated agriculture and hydel generation in the country, said a press release. Tarbela Dam has been playing a key role for socio-economic development in Pakistan for the last 50 years by providing water for agriculture at the time when it is needed, controlling floods and generating low-cost hydel electricity.

The position of the river inflows and outflows at Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma along with the reservoirs levels and the barrages is as under:

Low-level flood

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), there is a low-level flood at Chashma and Kalabagh barrages on the Indus River, and a medium-level flood at Taunsa. On the Sutlej River, low-level flooding is occurring at Ganda Singh Wala and Bhaid Sulaimanki.

The spokesperson stated that water flow in the major areas and tributaries of the Jhelum River is normal. The flow in key areas of the Chenab River is also normal, and the Ravi River is flowing at normal levels as well.

There is low-level flooding at Palkhu and Basantar streams, while there is no flow in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan Division. Tarbela Dam is 100% full and Mangla Dam is 74% full. The public is urged to take precautionary measures.
