Mayor inspects rainwater drainage as Karachi braces for more rain

Published on: August 22, 2025 1:33 AM

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab visited different areas of District Central including Nagan Chowrangi, Do Minute Chowrangi, Surjani, Sakhi Hasan, KDA Chowrangi, Hyderi and other locations. On this occasion, he said that teams of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) worked tirelessly day and night to clear all these areas, which he personally inspected on site.

Mayor Karachi stated that timely disposal and the swift performance of the staff ensured the drainage of rainwater, and comprehensive measures are being taken to ensure quick removal of accumulated water from across the city. During the visit, Mayor Karachi also listened to public complaints and issued immediate directives for their resolution. He said that Gujjar Nullah is now flowing in its natural course and had the drains not been cleaned in time, the situation would have been different.

During his visits to Gurumandir, Jahangir Road, Federal B Area, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Sher Shah Suri Road and other locations, Mayor Karachi said that at some choking points, bags of stones and gravel were found by the staff of the Water Corporation, however, the administration immediately acted and removed these obstructions. He further said that traffic flow has been restored on Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Shahrah-e-Aurangzeb and Rashid Minhas Road, while Sher Shah Suri Road is also open for traffic. He added that wherever complaints are being received from citizens, he himself is visiting those places to assess the situation so that problems can be resolved promptly.

While visiting District West, Mayor Karachi said that in the heavy rains of 2020 and 2021, Yousuf Goth was completely devastated and presented the scene of a flood. A decision was made to construct a new major drain here to improve the sewerage system. Today, after the rains, water is flowing smoothly through Yousuf Goth, and despite the heavy downpour, the streets of the area did not submerge because drainage is taking place in an effective manner.

Mayor Karachi said that KMC has cleared all routes from North Nazimabad to Sohrab Goth. He added that workers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) are working in this area with dedication, due to which visible improvements can be seen. The elected representatives are also making strong and effective efforts, and the difference is clear. “Those who only criticize and talk are on one side, but our practical work speaks for itself,” he remarked.

On this occasion, Deputy Parliamentary Leader in City Council Dil Muhammad, Town Chairman Haji Nawaz Brohi, UC Chairperson Zubeida, other elected representatives and officials were also present.

Meanwhile, Karachi is bracing for a third consecutive day of torrential rain as meteorologists warned of more heavy downpours, raising fears of urban flooding in several parts of the city.

The next round of rain is expected to last till today.

The death toll from rain-related accidents in Karachi has climbed to 17 over the past 48 hours. Following the deteriorating situation, all public and private schools and colleges in Karachi remained closed on Thursday.
