The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday expressed strong displeasure over the failure of restaurants to comply with the official closing time and directed strict action against violators.
The court ordered that all restaurants across the city must shut down by 12:00 AM, without exception.
Justice Shahid Karim resumed proceedings on a set of petitions filed by Haroon Farooq and others seeking preventive measures against smog and environmental pollution. During the hearing, a member of the Judicial Water and Environmental Commission informed the court that tree plantation campaigns are planned in 760 colleges across Punjab.
At this, the court made it clear that no trees along the canal shall be cut without its prior permission. It further recommended the establishment of a Miyawaki-style urban forest, particularly suggesting Johar Town, Lahore, as a suitable site for plantation.
The court also inquired about the delay in the inauguration of a smog emission analyzer machine, which was previously scheduled.
To which, a provincial law officer attributed the delay to undisclosed reasons.
Justice Karim also sought a report regarding a previous statement by the Director General (DG) of the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) concerning tree cutting. The PHA’s counsel clarified that the statement was outdated and no new remarks had been issued by the current DG.
The court, however, stressed the need for a clear explanation from the DG and said that orders regarding action against those involved in illegal tree cutting would be issued the same day.
The court also ordered the appointment of an independent consultant for monitoring the ongoing Yellow Line project.
Meanwhile, the judicial commission member reported observing thick black smoke in the Sheikhupura area while traveling to Islamabad.
In response, the court directed authorities to impose a heavy fine on the brick kiln responsible, located near Hiran Minar. The court also instructed that all kiln owners in Sheikhupura be warned, any further violations will lead to the demolition of their kilns.
The court adjourned further hearing on the environmental petitions till July 28.
