LAHORE – Talks between the Punjab Assembly Speaker and 26 suspended opposition lawmakers resumed on Friday, with both sides agreeing to continue negotiations over the ongoing disqualification reference.
The meeting, which lasted over an hour, was held at the Punjab Assembly under the chairmanship of Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan. Suspended lawmakers were led by Opposition Leader Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar, with discussions focusing on the way forward regarding their suspension and political differences.
To support the Speaker, several key government figures were present, including Provincial Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman and Chief Whip Rana Muhammad Arshad. Their presence highlighted the seriousness of the matter and the government’s interest in a resolution.
During the dialogue, both parties agreed to hold another negotiation session on Sunday. The development suggests a possible thaw in tensions between the government and opposition, as they explore options to end the legislative impasse.
Speaking after the meeting, Opposition Leader Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar clarified that it was a hearing and not a formal meeting. He also distanced the opposition from controversial remarks made by PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah about the PTI founder’s sons, calling them inaccurate.
This renewed effort at dialogue comes amid a politically charged environment in Punjab, with the suspended members challenging the disqualification proceedings and pushing for reinstatement through institutional engagement.
