Karachi sets grave price at Rs14,300, begins crackdown on unregistered cemeteries

Published on: July 7, 2025 5:08 PM

In a major step toward regulating burial services, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has fixed the price of a grave at Rs14,300 and ordered the registration of all cemeteries in the city. The move aims to bring transparency and prevent overcharging in burial fees.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab revealed that only 38 out of more than 200 cemeteries in Karachi are officially registered with KMC. He directed all cemetery in-charges to immediately begin the registration process to ensure proper oversight and accountability.

The mayor strictly warned cemetery administrations against collecting fees higher than the set amount. “No one is allowed to exploit grieving families,” Wahab stated, adding that action will be taken against violators found charging extra.

This decision comes amid growing public complaints about varying and often inflated burial charges. By setting a standard price and requiring registration, the KMC hopes to stop such malpractice and provide relief to citizens during difficult times.

In addition, the KMC will monitor all registered cemeteries to ensure compliance with the fixed pricing and operational standards. Authorities will also launch inspections to identify and penalize unregistered graveyards operating without approval.

Overall, this new policy marks a strong push toward order and fairness in Karachi’s burial system. Residents have welcomed the initiative, hoping it will end exploitation and ensure dignity for their loved ones’ final resting places.
