The Government of Pakistan has announced that Saturday, July 5, and Sunday, July 6, 2025, will be public holidays nationwide in observance of Ashura, marking the 9th and 10th of Muharram, 1447 A.H.
The official notification, issued in continuation of the Cabinet Division’s earlier circular No.10-01/2024-Min-11 dated December 23, 2024, states that the Prime Minister has approved the holidays for both five-day and six-day working week offices, ensuring uniform observance across all federal departments and institutions.
Ashura, one of the most sacred events in the Islamic calendar, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions at Karbala. The day holds immense spiritual and historical importance for Muslims, particularly within the Shia community, and is observed with religious gatherings, processions, and special prayers.
As part of the national observance, all government offices, public sector institutions, and most private organizations will remain closed. Provinces may issue separate notifications in alignment with their local administrative needs and security arrangements.
In light of the large public gatherings expected during the two days, security forces and local administrations are preparing comprehensive plans to ensure peace, safety, and smooth traffic flow, especially in major urban centers such as Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, and Peshawar.
