A deadly fire at a chemical factory in southern India has claimed the lives of 40 people and injured over 33 others, according to a statement released by Sigachi Industries on Wednesday. The incident occurred on Monday at their manufacturing facility in Telangana state.
At the time of the fire, 143 employees were present inside the plant. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause, while the state government has formed a five-member committee to lead the probe.
In a statement, Sigachi Industries clarified that the tragedy was not caused by a reactor explosion, as initially speculated. However, operations at the facility will remain suspended for approximately 90 days during the investigation and safety review.
Rescue teams and emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, but the intensity of the fire made evacuation efforts challenging. Families of the victims are now demanding answers and compensation.
Sigachi Industries is a major producer of microcrystalline cellulose, a key ingredient used in pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, and specialty chemicals. The company serves clients in several countries, including the United States and Australia.
This incident has sparked nationwide concerns over industrial safety standards in India, especially in chemical plants. As the investigation continues, both government officials and company representatives have promised full transparency and accountability.
