The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has restored multiple reserved seats for women and minorities after the Supreme Court’s recent decision. These seats had been on hold due to legal disputes and political challenges. With this ruling, the ECP has now issued official notifications to confirm the allotment of these seats. The decision benefits several major parties including PML-N, PPP, and JUI-F.
In the National Assembly, 11 women’s seats from Punjab were reinstated. Out of these, PML-N secured 10 while PPP received 1. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa got back 5 women’s seats. PML-N and PPP received two seats each, and JUI-F got one. Moreover, three minority seats were also restored in the National Assembly. These were equally divided between PML-N, PPP, and JUI-F—each receiving one seat.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s assembly, 21 reserved seats for women were reinstated. JUI-F received the highest share with 8 seats. PML-N followed with 6 seats, and PPP got 5. PTI-Parliamentarians and ANP each secured one seat. Along with this, four reserved seats for minorities were also brought back. JUI-F got 2, while PML-N and PPP got one each.
Punjab Assembly saw the return of 24 reserved seats for women. PML-N dominated with 21 seats. PPP, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), and PML-Q got one seat each. Additionally, three minority seats were restored in Punjab. PML-N got two, and PPP got one. In Sindh Assembly, two women’s reserved seats were restored, one each going to PPP and MQM. These changes reflect the revised share based on the parties’ overall performance.
Furthermore, the ECP has canceled the notifications that declared several winners on general seats as PTI candidates. These winners had contested independently after PTI lost its election symbol. This step follows Supreme Court’s directive and corrects earlier decisions by the ECP. The restored reserved seats may shift political dynamics in the assemblies and could impact coalition-building in the coming months.
