Coke Studio, one of the largest music platforms and biggest international music franchises in Pakistan, has received massive appreciation from audiences over the years, having started in 2008 and ever since defined as a brand of music that people of all genres can relate to.
Having started off with Rohail Hyatt as the producer of the show, Coke Studio entered its tenth phase with Strings’ very own Bilal Maqsood and Faisal Kapadia taking its reigns from him after season 6 came to an end, working through the live studio-recorded series for four whole consecutive seasons (7 through 10) and elevating it to the next level with perfection.
Amidst claims and much criticism of Hayat losing his ‘musical creativity’ while the seasons kept progressing, Coke, the parent brand behind Coke Studio in collaboration with Strings, decided to experiment and give the studio a riveting new direction.
Showcasing songs such as O Re and Nadiya, amongst many splendid others, Faisal Kapadia and Bilal Maqsood have permanently engraved their wonders upon our tender hearts.
However, they just recently broke the news of parting ways with the self-enriching reality of the live studio-recorded series, bidding farewell to all and sundry in a post on their facebook page.
They went on to say: “Coke Studio Season 10 will be the last season produced by Strings. It has been a fantastic journey for us over the course of 4 seasons and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and share our work with all of you.
2018 will mark 30 years of Strings and we are super excited to celebrate with all of you so stay tuned for more updates as we embark on yet another exciting chapter in our musical journey!”
The concept for Coke Studio emerged in 2007 by The Coca-Cola Company that took inspiration from musical performances staged on a concert-like platform in Brazil. The idea then of a Pakistani version of the show helmed by Vital Signs member Rohail Hyatt back in the days, proved to be an immediate and all-rounding success, receiving widespread critical acclaim as one of the most ‘legend’ shows in the country, making waves into a myriad of musical languages understood by the people – all the way from traditional classical to folk, from Suffi to qawwali, from ghazal to bhangra, as well as from contemporary hip hop to rock. Various artists from various regions have contributed to the quality fusion of music, playing a pivotal role in reviving the music industry of Pakistan.
Hyatt remained as executive producer for the show until season 6, stepping aside in 2013 after five years when he was replaced by the members of Strings, Bilal Maqsood and Faisal Kapadia. On 29 October 2017, the duo announced Season 10 to be their last production.
