OpenAI has rolled out a GitHub connector for its ChatGPT deep research tool, making it easier for users to explore and understand code directly from GitHub repositories. This new feature allows developers to ask questions about codebases, engineering docs, and technical details within their projects. The GitHub integration is now available in beta for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, with support for Enterprise and Education tiers expected soon. It marks the first official connector for ChatGPT’s deep research capability, designed to help users generate detailed reports and summaries using real-time data. With this new feature, developers can break down product specifications into smaller tasks, summarize code structures, and analyze APIs with live code. According to OpenAI’s Head of Business Products, Nate Gonzalez, the connector was built in direct response to strong demand from developers seeking smarter tools for handling internal data. Importantly, the tool respects GitHub’s permission settings and only accesses repositories that have been explicitly shared with ChatGPT. While the AI may still produce some inaccurate outputs, OpenAI describes it as a support tool that saves time rather than replacing expert human review. This launch comes as OpenAI continues to invest in developer tools. Recent releases include the Codex CLI, a terminal-based coding assistant, and updates to the ChatGPT desktop app that improve code readability. OpenAI is also in talks to acquire Windsurf, an AI coding startup, for $3 billion. At the same time, OpenAI has expanded its fine-tuning options. The o4-mini model now supports reinforcement fine-tuning, while GPT-4.1 nano is customizable for lightweight use cases. These features are currently available only to verified organizations as part of OpenAI’s strategy to ensure responsible use.
