Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the historic relief package for electricity consumers announced by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif. In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday, PM Shehbaz Sharif praised the relief of Rs14 per unit for consumers using up to 500 units of electricity, calling it a “truly public-friendly initiative” by Nawaz Sharif and the Punjab chief minister. “Upon Nawaz Sharif’s directive, the government has prioritised public relief since taking office,” he added. The prime minister highlighted that the federal government recently redirected Rs50 billion from the development budget to provide relief on electricity prices, benefiting consumers using up to 200 units. He emphasised ongoing efforts to combat electricity theft and implement reforms in the power sector for a sustainable and long-term solution. “Under Nawaz Sharif’s leadership, we are taking steps to ease people’s lives after achieving economic stability,” PM Shehbaz said. He noted that the country’s trajectory is now moving in the right direction, with public relief and reducing inflation being the government’s top priorities. “We are working on a lasting solution to reduce electricity prices and are making every possible effort in this regard,” he concluded. Separately, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, has welcomed the reduction in electricity prices in Punjab, calling it a positive development. In a statement on social media platform X on Friday, Hafiz Naeem said, “Jamaat-e-Islami’s resistance and struggle are bearing fruit. After Punjab, the federal and provincial governments must extend this relief across the entire country.” He demanded that the relief should not be temporary but permanent, urging other provincial governments and the federal authorities to make similar progress in reducing electricity prices.
