Sir: Almost all the cellular companies in Pakistan are offering attractive late night call packages that are quite popular perhaps for the reason that they are within everyone’s means. One of the main reasons for the popularity of such packages is that they help people making nationwide calls and talking to their relatives for hours and hours. On the other hand, cell phones have become a fashion statement and symbol of independence for our youth by developing social groups. Not all of them but a big part of the youth certainly avails the facility of late night call packages (which are in effect usually from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am) and spend sleepless nights, which affects their studies. In some cases, they simply skip going to schools and colleges in the morning because of sleep deprivation. The ban itself is a good decision but will it be the only solution to help youth realise what their moral and social obligations are? The most controversial idea behind these packages is the timing, but is blaming the telecom companies the right thing to do? After all, it is only a business strategy to attract customers. Parents are equally responsible for their children’s behaviour. They should keep an eye on their children’s activities, what kind of friends they are making, how they are progressing academically and how they are spending their time. Nowadays the youth is more mature and have more exposure and can understand things very easily and quickly. The responsibility falls on the youth as to how they can understand the world around them. Staying up at nights and sleepwalking through long working days will definitely affect their health, education and professional lives. SUNDUS QAYYUM Karachi
