Sir: Long gone are the days when lawn was considered a light and airy fabric worn casually to fight the summer heat. Time has transformed lawn to luxury prêt with prices soaring to ridiculous heights and actresses from across the border flashing designer lawn ensembles in every nook and corner of the city. A drive from Karsaz to Shahrah-e-Faisal has 50 or so such billboards, each consisting of a model adorning a designer lawn outfit and is appealing enough to leave even the most conservative of people staring and gawking with their mouths agape. Lawn madness has reached a whole new level this year with a dozen new brands and designers joining the bandwagon and a single dress priced higher than what a large portion of the population earns in a month. Yet, there is no decrease in the frenzy with which women buy these fabrics and the intensity with which they flock various exhibitions. With a billboard every mile plastered with a model’s face asking you to buy a jora from the brand, and the mobs of women rushing to get it before anyone else, it is hard to believe Pakistan is, in fact, a poor country.
