Sir: This is with reference to substandard and poorly maintained medical equipment that leads to fatal accidents during anaesthesia. Many times, funds meant for purchase of medical machinery are lapsed or the apparatus is in a bad condition due to its improper maintenance. Unluckily, little attention has been paid to a concerned branch of technology called biomedical engineering. I met such an engineer in Multan but he was not satisfied perhaps due to poor incentives and left for his native town Karachi after some time. There is an urgent need of promoting biomedical engineering in order to avoid such hazards. DR QAMBER ABBAS Rawalpindi
