KARACHI: The administration of Sindh Madrassa tul-Islam has failed to move the university to new campus to Educational City, despite passage of five years, Daily Times learnt on Wednesday. Sindh Madrassa tul-Islam (SMI), initially a school which was converted into a university in 2012 but its administration failed to construct a new campus. Sindh Madrassa tul-Islam (SMI), a pre partition school where Father of Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah got early education, but when it was converted into a university and Sindh Madrassa tul-Islam (SMI) the Act 2012 clearly stated that the newly formed university will be moved to a new campus. The existing school building will also be opened for visitors so that they may enjoy its historical importance, where father of the nation got his early education. Not this alone, but also the administration of SMI has set up their offices in the historical school after getting charter of the university from Sindh government in 2012. The school has been shifted on the backyard of the Sindh Madrassa tul-Islam into a newly constructed building over sewerage Nullah which is passing through the underground premises of the school. The Sindh government has however allotted 100-acre land in the Education City located on the Link Road connecting National Highway and Super Highway. The Finance Department, Sindh had also approved RS 3569.89 million in the Planning Commission (PC-1) in 2013 but administration of SMIU is reluctant to construct a new building for the University. Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi, the most prominent educationist of his time, had established Sindh Madressatul Islam on 1st September 1885. Mr Effendi also set up the first Muslim Girls’ School (MGS) of Sindh at Marriot Road in Karachi. Before the partition of subcontinent, SMI was affiliated with Bombay University. However, SMI was upgraded to the college level in 1943 and then former President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari took the initiative to upgrade the SMI College up to the university level in 2010. After the 18th amendment in Constitution of Pakistan, education became a provincial subject thus the Sindh Assembly passed the bill of Sindh Madressatul Islam University in 2011 and former governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan awarded the charter of SMI University on 16 February, 2012. Sindh Madressatul Islam University is one of the oldest education institutions in South Asia, where the Founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah got his early education from 1887 to 1892 but hundred years old educational institute has laterally turned into an administrative building. The historical class rooms, where well-known people, political leaders and scholars have studied including Quaid-e-Azam Muhammed Ali Jinnah, Abdullah Haroon, Allama I.I. Qazi , Shaikh Abdul Majeed Sindhi, Jan Muhammad Junejo, Shah Nawaz Bhutto, Ghulam Hussain Hidyatallah, Umar Bin Muhammad Daudpota, Muhammad Ayub Khuhro, Mir Ghous Bakhsh Bezanjo, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, Justice Syed Sajjad Ali Shah, AK Brohi,Justice Wajihuddin and cricketer Hanif Muhammad ,have turned into offices. Libraries and archive sections have been closed while all antique instrument of labs, old furniture and other historical and valuable material has been sold out. Despite been defined in the SMIU Act 2011 under the section 47(i) and (ii) that any of the department or section will be not closed because of its historical background. The building of the SMIU is also protected site under the Sindh Heritage Act and status of the building could not be changed. The officials of SMIU were contacted by Daily Times through email and personal cellular numbers, for their version howrever the Director of Public Relation department, Anwar Ali Abro said that he is busy in a meeting. However, his coordinator, Mustafa Jatoi said that Sindh Madrass tul-Islam is a Model School and also a part of the university. He said that SMI Model School has two buildings; one was built hundred years ago while the second building was built in 1997. “It is sufficient to explain that parents refer their children for admission in SMIMS which is three times more than the capacity of accommodation” he added.
