KARACHI: The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan has recently de listed around 19 science research journals published from various varsities across Pakistan, Daily Times has learnt. Those journals did not meet the HEC criteria since the publishers of those journals had ignored the terms and conditions for its publishing. The HEC’s quality enhancement cell has showed serious concerns regarding those substandard research journals. Majority of the non-standard journals were being published about health science. As per available record provided by HEC, two journals of engineering and technology namely Pakistan Journal of Hydrocarbon Research and Pakistan Journal of Engineering Technology and Science, four journals of agricultural science including Journal of Agriculture Research, International Journal of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, Pakistan Journal of Entomology, Pakistan Journal of Physiopathology and five journals were being published about natural science inclusive of Pakistan Journal of Statistics , Journal of Statistics ,Pakistan Geographical Review, Pakistan Journal of Statistics and Operation Research, Pakistan Journal of Biotechnology and also the only journal of multidisciplinary namely Journal of Science and Technology have recently derecognized by HEC. The rest of non-standard journals are being published with different names by various health educational institutes across Pakistan in which Pakistan Journal of Pathology, Medical Forum Monthly Journal of Cardiovascular Decease, Pakistan Oral and Dental Journal, Journal of University Medical and Dental College, Gomal Journal of Medical Sciences, Pakistan Journal of Neurological Surgery, International Journal of Rehabilitation Sciences, Journal of Fatima Jinnah Medical College Lahore, Infectious Decease Journal of Pakistan and Pakistan Journal of Pharmacology have been identified as substandard journals. “We have already set a criteria for the publishing of any type of research journals and which are mostly being printed from various varsities and degree awarding institutes, DAIs and the publishers know very well about the policy but sometimes they ignore HEC’s directions deliberately” Director Media of HEC Ayesha Ikram explained, added that those journals have no impact factor worldwide not even in the country , they produce substandard and fake researches as well. She further said that most of the de listed journals have also failed to produce quality research and even the editors could ensure the up gradation to maintain its publishing schedule. Therefore in a high level meeting it was decided to de list those journals which have no worth in quality research. “We also notified and informed the researcher scholars not to publish research papers in such type of journals while HEC doesn’t compromise on quality for the sake of knowledge and quality research” she concluded. It is worthwhile mentioning here that last week HEC also revoked recognition of research journals of the category X Y and Zee-mostly about literature and social sciences. Those journals were commonly used by faculty members to increase number of publications merely for their promotion at varsities . Published in Daily Times, July 21st, 2017.
