BAGHDAD: The Iranian security forces killed three fighters linked to the Islamic State (IS) militant group in a city close to the Iraqi border on Tuesday and confiscated a weapons cache and belts armed with explosives, a senior official said. IRNA news agency quoted the governor of Kermanshah province, Asadollah Razani as saying that the three militants were shot dead in the house in the Kermanshah city where they were staying. The city is around 100 kilometres from the Iraqi border. A senior member of the Islamic State group was killed on Monday night in an operation in another city in the province, during which other supporters of the group were arrested, Razani added. The Iranian officials said that Islamic State militants had been targeting the country in recent months, while Tehran had ramped up its military presence in both Iraq and Syria following Russia’s entry into the conflict in Syria. In June, the Iranian intelligence authorities said that they had arrested 10 Islamic State militants and seized about 100 kilogrammes of explosives intended to be used in car and suicide bombings and other attacks in busy public places.
