LAHORE: A meeting of a large number of teachers from various academic departments of the Punjab University on Thursday applauded new Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zaffar Mueen Nasar’s efforts to start a cleansing process to rid the university of corrupt elements of the former vice chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran’s administration. The meeting was held at the Undergraduate Block under the auspices of the Teachers Alliance (Teachers Front, Academic Group, and Academic Front), which was chaired by Teachers Front President Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar. He was flanked by Samee Uzair and Iftikhar Ahmad Tarrar, heads of Academic Group and Academic Front, respectively. The faculty members welcomed the appointment of new Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zaffar Mueen Nasar and assured him of their full support for academic uplift, and for dealing with the seriously biased and “suffocated” atmosphere of the university. They reiterated that the vice chancellor should not be afraid of anyone from the corrupt mafia, because the overwhelming majority of faculty “stands shoulder to shoulder” with him for the professional growth of the teachers in a fair environment. The participants of the meeting stressed that the PU Academic Staff Association (ASA) had finished its tenure on December 31, 2016 and now they were occupying the offices illegally. Extending their full support, they said that the vice chancellor should not pay heed to the corrupt elements’ blackmailing tactics, and replace Dr Mujahid Kamran’s biased administration with neutral officers before the elections. As the fresh elections of the ASA have been announced, the house unanimously passed six resolutions. In the first resolution, they said that Dr Mujahid Kamran was illegally occupying the Vice Chancellor’s House and involved in mischievous activities against the university and its staff, as well as interfering in the ASA elections. They said that the VC’s House must be evacuated forthwith in line with the orders of honourable Lahore High Court (LHC) and the Supreme Court of Pakistan. In this regard an immediate notice must be issued by RO-1 to Dr Mujahid Kamran to immediately vacate the Vice Chancellor’s House without any further delay, they said. The teachers also showed their sympathetic concern over the forced stay of incumbent Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar and his family at the university’s executive club. In the second resolution, they said that the position of registrar should be filled in a regular manner, and the retired, biased, incompetent and convicted registrar be removed without further delay. They demanded in the third resolution that the RO-I and RO-II be replaced to give a level-playing field to all teachers. In the fourth one, they said that the PU Hall Council chairman be sacked for hatching conspiracies against the incumbent vice chancellor and misleading him on official matters, and an inquiry be held in the Hall Council affairs. The fifth resolution was about the university’s housing scheme Town-III, in which the teachers demanded that the project’s affairs be made transparent. They also said that the project be given legal protection under all prevailing rules so the teachers and staff were not deprived of their hard-earned money. In the last resolution, they said that the long overdue selection board meetings of the faculty be held at the earliest in accordance with the LHC orders. The meeting ended with a resolve by the faculty to restore the dignity of teachers, struggle for their rights and help make the university one of the finest academic institutions.
