Sir: During the last couple of weeks, reports in media regarding the prevalence of Congo virus in sacrificial animals had made the people quite worried and cautious ahead of Eid-ul-Azha early next month. Taking prompt notice of these reports, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif had constituted a special committee for monitoring the progress on standard operational procedures for the prevention and eradication of Congo virus. Punjab government is also benefiting from the expertise of Turkish researchers. According to the report presented by the special committee, there is no need to panic over the issue. Efforts are being made to address any such cases. This news has come after the provincial government had taken timely precautionary measures by vaccinating domestic animals goats, sheep and cows in districts of Chakwal, Attock and Dera Ghazi Khan. Reports have also mentioned that only eight Congo fever cases had been detected in the province, and these individuals had come to Punjab from Balochistan. Provincial authorities should take all possible preventive measures by carrying out awareness campaigns for cattle handlers throughout the province. Moreover, people purchasing animals for Eid-ul-Azha should also be aware of the symptoms and should take extra care while visiting cattle farms. MASROOR AHMAD Lahore
