ISLAMABAD: Lions Club International District Governor Sitara Satwat presented the best Leo Club award to the Islamabad Devcom Centennial Leo Club (IDCLC) on Thursday. The award presentation ceremony was organised by the Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan), the founder of IDCLC. The ceremony was attended by the senior lions and the leos. Speaking on the occasion, District Governor Sitara Satwat said youth was the only hope to reform the society. “That is why the Lions Clubs International is focusing more on the establishment of Leo Clubs all around the world. Pakistan has also seen the emergence of several Leo Clubs in the past two years. The encouraging sign is the performance of the Leo Clubs,” she said. She said it was neck to neck competition among all the Leo Clubs in the LCI District 305N2. “However, the launch of two significant campaigns, ‘Grow a plant, own a tree’ and the ‘food waste management campaign’ were the winning edge of the Islamabad Devcom Centennial Leo Club (IDCLC). IDCLC has given great contribution towards the community service as well,” she said. Devcom-Pakistan Director Munir Ahmed said the potential of youth was immense to bring about social change and environmental conservation. “A little over sixty per cent of the total population are the young people. They only need support and guidance to do big things for the betterment of society. We need to encourage our youth to take up the role of social entrepreneurs with motivated and innovative leadership. The technical skills along with teamwork would lead youth to become a big asset for the nation,” he said. Munir Ahmed said IDCLC was engaging youth in to environmental conservation. “The IDCLC has been engaged in different tree plantation drives, free-meals distribution, helping the needy students from the marginalised communities, clean up Margalla Hills National Park and several other activities to promote thematic awareness. The community engagement is vital part of public advocacy and thematic outreach, without it, we shall not expect any change at the grassroots level,” he said. Mustafain Kazmi, LCI District Convention chairperson, said all the Lions Clubs Were engaging youth with their social interventions. “It will help groom the youth leadership for social change that we need to transform our society dynamics,” he said. Shaaref Munir said that IDCLC had reached out to over 100 hotels and banquet halls with a message of controlling the food waste. He said different mechanisms have been adopted to control the food being wasted. He said the district management and city government could play their key role in controlling the food wastage by imposing strict measures on the banquet halls.
