ISLAMABAD: The fifth death anniversary of legendary singer Mehdi Hassan was observed on Tuesday. With unparalleled command on classical music and singing, Mehdi Hassan is still considered to be the most influential figure in the world of ghazal. Hassan was born on July 18, 1927, in Rajasthan, India, to a family of musicians. Soon after the partition in 1947, Mehdi Hassan and his entire family migrated to the small town of Chichawatni in Pakistan. To keep up the family tradition, he began training under his father Ustad Azeem Khan and uncle Ustad Ismail Khan with a focus on Thumari. After Partition, Hassan and his family migrated to Chichawatni in Pakistan. He made his debut at the age of 30 in 1957 on Radio Pakistan as a thumri singer. Other than that, he sang hundreds of songs. Most popular among these is “Mujhay Tum Nazar Say”.
