WASA’s performance lackluster: DCO

Published on: June 9, 2016 11:49 AM

MULTAN: Encroachment issue and poor performance by WASA were main factors compounding city’s problems and the names of three suitable candidates have been sent to the chief minister for appointment of a full fledged managing director of WASA in order to improve its performance, said DCO Nadir Chatha.

He said this while addressing a gathering of industrialists at Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) here which concluded late night Wednesday. The DCO said that WASA Multan failed to come upto the expectations of the people for service delivery and upkeep of sewerage and water supply systems. It was happening despite the fact that huge funds had been released to the civic body, said Nadir Chatha.

He said that administration was monitoring Wasa performance on daily basis. He said that Multan Waste Management Company (MWMC) was also facing management problems adding that the company had 1700 employees but 700 of them were non-serious for duty.

He said that around 1500-2000 ton solid waste got accumulated in the city, but 25 per cent of it got spread on roads. He said that a cement factory was purchasing solid waste from MWMC.However, the company asked MWMC to provide solid waste in proper quantity by plugging theft of recyclable waste.

“A committee has been formed to rename the roads and cross-sections in Multan and new names proposed by this committee would be finalised to be put on Google Maps,” Nadir Chatha said. He said that work order for execution of walled city project would be issued soon while the Italian ambassador has promised to provide Rs 110 million for rehabilitation and renovation of over 130 years old clock tower building traditionally called Ghanta Ghar. He said that the office of walled city project was also functional in GhantaGhar.

Earlier, MCCI president FareedMughees Sheikh, in his address of welcome, said a centre of excellence be set up in Multan for research and showcase the history and achievements of different personalities including artisans, craftsmen, entrepreneurs and people from different walks of life.
