Digital Forensic Research, Service Centre established

LAHORE: Lahore Garrison University (LGU) Vice Chancellor Obaid bin Zakria on Saturday announced the establishment of the Digital Forensic Research and Service Centre, saying the centre will provide leading innovative information technology education in the region.

“Establishment of this Digital Forensic Research and Service Centre is one of the important milestone towards achieving this goal,” he said this while addressing a seminar –importance of digital forensic in crime solving – at a local hotel. The purpose of the seminar was to provide awareness about the importance, significance and need of digital forensics in modern era.

Former Punjab governor Khalid Maqbool was the chief guest, whereas NAB Punjab director general Burhan Ali, special police teams from Lahore and Islamabad, FIA director general Syed Tehsin Shah and other personalities also participated in this event. The participants especially speakers appreciated the initiative of establishing a much-needed Digital Forensic Research and Service Centre.

This newly-established centre will also be helpful in investigation of crimes and countering cyber crimes, especially after the approval of cyber crime bill its significance has further increased. The developed countries are following and enhancing their capabilities in digital forensics and cyber security as main source of crime investigation, defence and offense.

The governments, private organisations and critical infrastructure is at risk due to cyber threats. The US government has declared the cyber space as the fifth domain of war. The other four domains are land, air, water and space. “The effort of the establishing the digital centre will bring our academics on similar excellence,” the vice chancellor said.

The Digital Forensic Research and Service Centre will conduct researches, surveys, trainings, certifications, degree programmes and will also publish white papers on various fields of digital forensics and cyber security. It is the first centre of its kind in Pakistan and intends to extend its services to the region.

Kaukab Jamal Zuberi, founding chairman of the International Association of Digital Forensic Experts (IADFE) is the director of the Digital Forensic Research and Service Centre. Lahore High Court Bar Association President Rana Zia Abdul Rehman and National Cyber Security Task Force member Khawaja Muhammad Ali also present on the ocassion.
