ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau has set a final deadline of 30 Sep 2016 to complete the investigation of corruption cases against 133 influential persons including Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif, sources disclosed.
NAB Chairman set two deadlines for these important cases but an investigation could not be completed in due course and investigation officers requested an extension to the deadline, which was granted. NAB sources said that there were cases under investigation against the prime minister, chief minister Punjab and others in Raiwind road construction, recruitment in FIA and misuse of authority. These investigations are pending after it came to light that both prime minister and chief minister misused their authority in construction of roads from Raiwind to the Sharif family house and thus misappropriated Rs125.664 million.
Sources told Daily Times that a special committee already suggested for the closure of cases against the Sharif brothers, there were signs that cases against both brothers would be closed on the basis that evidence brought was insufficient to proceed further against them. Investigations in rental power scam are yet to be completed as well. In this case, NAB was investigating the former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, former finance minister Shaukat Tareen, former Secretary Shahid Rafi, N.A Zubairi and Fazal Ahmad Khan on accusations that they awarded the RPP contract to M/S gulf rental power private limited Eminabad.
The fate of cases against PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Shujat Hussain, Chaudhry Pervez Ellahi, and Younis Habib would also be finalised by 30 September. After 30 September, NAB would decide whether to submit references against them or to close the cases once and for all. Both Chaudhries have already denied charges against them.
