Pakistani celebs are always ready to offer opinions/critique on politics or sports and even social issues, but when it comes to the prevailing harassment culture in their own industry, most of them refuse to take a stand.
Recently, Eman Suleman, a model took to Instagram and spoke regarding the fake oblivion industry tends to claim when it comes to harassment issues within their people.
Suleman spoke about how the #MeToo Movement failed to make gains in the Pakistani entertainment industry because the campaign was never taken seriously. The predators never meet their fate because of the unending support from their fellows, especially in media, the model wrote on Instagram.
“There is no such thing as accountability in Pakistan especially if you are a person of power and influence. We talk about predators but we seldom talk about people who give these offenders a more latitude… after they’ve been accused of harassment,” the post read.
“There is a reason that issues like these die in a few months and offenders go home without any accountability. The people who show leniency towards the offenders and use the tag of ‘Innocent until Proven Guilty’ are the major reason behind no accountability and zero repentance,” Suleman said adding said that even the label of innocent until proven guilty is disgusting as it “encourages others”.
There have been many cases where actors, producers, singers were accused of harassing, by their own colleagues. The most prominent example is that of Meesha Shafi, who accused famous singer turned actor Ali Zafar of harassment.
Sadly, the Meesha-Ali issue turned in to a form of gossip among the media fraternity rather than a catalyst of change.
