Gas supply to ASH suspended, patients suffer

KARACHI: The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Saturday suspended gas supply to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) over default of payment, it was revealed on Saturday.

An official at ASH told sources that an SSGC team disconnected the gas supply to the hospital due to the non-payment.

He said that the administration had been compelled to postpone dozens of scheduled surgical operations, while emergency, gynecology, orthopedic and other departments also partially remained disturbed.

He said that sterilization of medical instruments and boiler also stopped functioning due to gas unavailability.

He said that the patients care in the public sector tertiary care hospital had badly been affected that had increased the miseries of patients. He said that the operations in the emergency and operation theater department would also remain suspended till the restoration of gas supply to the facility.

Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Nadeem Ahmed Rajput, said that the gas supply to the institution had been suspended by SSGC over default of Rs 21.919 million.

He said that dozens of scheduled surgeries were suspended while functioning of emergency, gynecology, ortho and other departments was also disrupted due to gas unavailability.

He said that the administration was using LPG cylinders to carry out surgeries in Emergency Department and requested Sui Southern Gas Company General Manager (SSGC) to restore gas supply to the hospital on humanitarian basis so that patient care is not disturbed in the facility. He informed that SSGC officials assured that gas supply would be restored soon.
