KARACHI: Matloob Ahmed won the 37th CAS Open Golf Championship at Airmen Golf Course, PAF Base Korangi Creek, here Sunday. The fifth and the final day was a nail-biting competition between Matloob and Zulfiqar Ali but the former emerged victorious with a gross score of 285 (03 under-par). The second position holder Zulfiqar Ali had a gross score of 287 (01 under par). The third position was shared by Muhammad Shabbir and Waheed Baloch with the identical gross score of 288. Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force, was the chief guest at prize distribution ceremony. Air Chief Marshal Sohail congratulated the winners of all categories and appreciated the management committee, officials and personnel of Airmen Golf Course for making the event a success. In the women’s event, Aania Farooq won the gross title for the sisth consecutive time with a score of 91 while in the net category Ayesha Fauzan stood first with a score of 79.
The Airmen Golf Course is one of the most challenging golf courses in Pakistan and presents tough playing conditions with narrow fairways and numerous bunkers spread all over the course. A total of 325 golfers, including 112 professionals, participated in the championship from all over the country for Rs 8 million prize purse. The Chief of the Air Staff Open Golf Championship was introduced in 1977 and ever since it has been an annual feature in the Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) and the PAF annual sports calendars.
