The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday reserved its verdict on the maintainability of petitions filed by Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha seeking suspension of their sentences in the controversial tweets case, as well as on a miscellaneous application filed by the NCCIA raising objections to the petitions. Justice Muhammad Azam Khan heard the case. During the hearing, counsel for the NCCIA argued that the sentence suspension petitions had been filed prematurely and requested the court to first decide the agency’s miscellaneous application challenging their maintainability. “If the other miscellaneous application is heard first, our application will become ineffective,” the NCCIA counsel submitted. Counsel for the petitioners, Faisal Siddiqui, told the court that he was ready to argue the maintainability issue immediately. “They are seeking dismissal of the sentence suspension petitions. Both matters may be heard together,” he argued. Justice Azam Khan, however, advised Siddiqui to take sufficient time to prepare, observing that it would be in the best interest of his clients’ legal rights. Siddiqui responded that he was prepared to proceed and was willing to waive any such right. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court reserved its verdict on the question of maintainability.
