Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on Friday, citing serious health concerns. His departure comes months before former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s planned return to the country’s political scene.
According to the president’s office, Shahabuddin was diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy following recent medical examinations. In a statement, he said the condition causes occasional loss of consciousness, making it difficult to continue in office.

The 76-year-old assumed the largely ceremonial presidency in April 2023. His tenure included the political turmoil that followed Sheikh Hasina’s departure to India after the 2024 student-led uprising.
Meanwhile, the resignation leaves Hasina without any allies in senior state positions. Her Awami League party remains banned, while many of its leaders and supporters have been jailed or gone into hiding since the uprising.
According to the president’s office, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad will perform presidential duties until a successor is elected. The arrangement ensures continuity in the country’s constitutional framework.

Additionally, although the president serves as commander-in-chief of Bangladesh’s armed forces, executive authority remains with the prime minister and cabinet. The presidency is largely a ceremonial office under the country’s parliamentary system.
Therefore, Bangladesh will begin the process of selecting a new president in the coming weeks. The leadership transition comes as the country continues to navigate a changing political landscape.
