According to reports, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has included Anas Sarwar in his cabinet, assigning him the trade portfolio. The appointment reflects growing representation of British politicians of Pakistani origin in senior government positions.

Expressing his enthusiasm following the appointment, Anas Sarwar said he was honoured by the opportunity and committed to serving the country by promoting trade, investment and economic growth.

As part of his new role, Anas Sarwar is also expected to become a member of the House of Lords, adding another distinction to his political career. With this development, he is being described as the first politician to have held membership across all three legislative houses in the United Kingdom, a milestone supporters have called historic.

Congratulatory messages have poured in from Pakistan, the United Kingdom and other countries, with political leaders, community representatives and members of the British-Pakistani diaspora praising the appointment.

Former Punjab governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar also received messages of congratulations, with supporters describing the development as a proud moment for overseas Pakistanis and a reflection of the growing contribution of the British-Pakistani community to public service.

Anas Sarwar has been an influential figure in British politics and has consistently advocated stronger economic ties, inclusive governance and greater opportunities for diverse communities.

His appointment is expected to further strengthen engagement between the UK government and business stakeholders while promoting international trade initiatives.

The development has attracted considerable attention on both sides of the globe, with many observers viewing it as another example of the increasing role of British Pakistanis in the country’s political landscape.
