Protests broke out across several Ukrainian cities after President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Demonstrators criticised the unexpected decision and demanded his reinstatement. The move has triggered concern among military personnel, analysts, and sections of civil society.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in central Kyiv carrying banners supporting Fedorov and condemning his removal. Similar demonstrations were reported in other cities as public dissatisfaction grew. Parliament was expected to vote on Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko as Fedorov’s proposed successor.

Speaking at a press conference, Fedorov suggested disagreements with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi contributed to his dismissal. He said he had recommended replacing senior military leaders, but President Zelensky rejected the proposal. Fedorov also confirmed he declined an offer to remain as a presidential adviser.
Fedorov nevertheless expressed confidence in Zelensky’s leadership and said he acted according to his conscience. During his tenure, he led reforms focused on military innovation, anti-corruption measures, drone warfare, and modernising defence procurement. His initiatives earned broad support from many soldiers and technology experts.

Several military figures and defence specialists criticised the decision, warning it could weaken Ukraine’s defence reforms. Protesters argued Fedorov’s leadership had strengthened the country’s military capabilities during the war with Russia. The government has not provided a detailed explanation for his dismissal.
