Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey eyes record-breaking global debut

Published on: July 15, 2026 6:21 PM

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is shaping up to become one of the biggest box office launches of 2026 as early forecasts point toward an outstanding opening worldwide. Industry estimates suggest the film could collect between $90 million and $100 million across North America during its opening weekend, while global earnings may comfortably cross the impressive $200 million mark.

Moreover, growing excitement has encouraged even stronger projections, with some analysts expecting the film to earn more than $100 million in North America and exceed $220 million worldwide. Strong advance interest, widespread audience anticipation, and Nolan’s reputation for delivering cinematic spectacles continue to build momentum before the film officially reaches theaters on July 17.

Another major factor driving demand is the film’s unique production, as Nolan shot The Odyssey entirely with IMAX cameras to create a more immersive viewing experience. As a result, tickets for many 70mm IMAX screenings reportedly sold out well before release, highlighting exceptional audience enthusiasm and reinforcing expectations of a massive opening weekend.

Meanwhile, Nolan’s previous blockbuster Oppenheimer has further strengthened confidence in the new release after earning critical acclaim, major awards, and remarkable commercial success. Backed by a reported production budget of around $250 million, The Odyssey has the potential to become one of the highest-grossing films of the year if strong reviews and positive audience reactions continue to fuel ticket sales.

Based on Homer’s legendary Greek epic, the film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and features an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and Benny Safdie. With an acclaimed director, a celebrated story, cutting-edge filmmaking, and enormous audience interest, The Odyssey enters cinemas carrying expectations of both critical success and record-breaking box office performance.
