Bilawal and Fazl criticise Khawaja Asif over AJK remarks

Published on: June 24, 2026 3:31 PM

NA debate heats up over AJK unrest - Pakistan Today

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman strongly criticised Defence Minister Khawaja Asif over his remarks regarding residents of Rawalakot in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), urging the government to adopt a more conciliatory approach amid ongoing political tensions in the region.

The controversy emerged during a National Assembly session, where opposition leaders objected to comments attributed to Khawaja Asif questioning the identity of Rawalakot residents. The remarks came against the backdrop of protests led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) over the reservation of 12 seats for refugees in the upcoming AJK Legislative Assembly elections.

Addressing the House, Fazlur Rehman called for patience and restraint, arguing that emotional responses from government representatives could further aggravate the situation. He said the government’s reaction should reflect responsibility and wisdom, adding that dialogue remained the best way to address concerns raised by protesters.

The JUI-F chief revealed that he had received a charter of demands from the Awami Action Committee and had forwarded it to the government. He urged authorities to review the demands seriously and avoid the use of force against demonstrators.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also criticised the defence minister, saying certain members of the federal cabinet were creating difficulties for the government instead of helping resolve disputes. He questioned why remarks that had sparked controversy in AJK had not been withdrawn and called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ensure greater discipline within the cabinet.

Responding on behalf of the government, Rana Sanaullah defended the administration’s handling of the issue. He said a committee had been formed to examine concerns related to refugee seats and reiterated the government’s willingness to welcome mediation efforts by Fazlur Rehman.

The debate reflects continuing political tensions over electoral representation and governance issues in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
