Published on: June 18, 2026 8:31 PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assured Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian of Pakistan’s continued support in the next phase of negotiations with the United States. The assurance came during a telephone call between the two leaders on Wednesday. The development follows the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the call lasted more than 30 minutes and marked the first contact after the agreement. PM Shehbaz congratulated the Iranian leadership on the deal and praised its expected role in regional peace. He said Pakistan would continue to act as a supportive neighbour in all areas of cooperation.

The Iranian president thanked Pakistan for its mediation role in facilitating the agreement. He particularly acknowledged the efforts of Pakistan’s leadership and military command in achieving the breakthrough. Both sides described the agreement as a positive step toward stabilising regional relations.

The leaders also discussed expanding bilateral ties across economic and diplomatic areas. They agreed to maintain close contact and to exchange visits in the near future. Officials said both countries aim to deepen cooperation following the peace framework.

The memorandum, signed by the US, Iran and Pakistan as mediator, is expected to enter into force immediately. It includes provisions for ceasefire extension and reopening of key maritime routes. Further technical negotiations are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
