Four GB independents join IPP

Published on: June 16, 2026 7:28 PM

Four independent candidates elected to the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly have joined the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP). The move strengthens the party’s position in the newly elected assembly and could influence future political alignments. The development is significant as parties seek support to shape the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The lawmakers announced their decision during a meeting with Federal Minister Aleem Khan. The new entrants include Muhammad Dilpazeer from GBA-15 Diamer, Aman Ali from GBA-21 Ghizer-3, Anwar Ali from GBA-23 Ghanche, and Asad Shafiq from GBA-24 Ghanche-3. Their inclusion provides an early boost to IPP’s representation in the regional legislature.

Speaking after the announcement, Dilpazeer said the four elected members had formed a group before deciding to join IPP. He added that the lawmakers believed the party offered a suitable platform for advancing development and political priorities in Gilgit-Baltistan. The move reflects ongoing efforts by political parties to consolidate support following the elections.

The newly joined members also indicated that discussions were continuing with other independent legislators and representatives from Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen. According to Dilpazeer, efforts would be made to persuade additional lawmakers to join the party. Such developments could alter the balance of power within the assembly in the coming days.

IPP leaders expressed confidence that the party would emerge as the second-largest political force in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly. Political observers expect coalition-building and negotiations to continue as parties position themselves ahead of government formation. The latest defections highlight the fluid nature of post-election politics in the region.
