Trump invites Iraqi premier to Washington

Published on: June 16, 2026 5:39 PM

US President Donald Trump is set to host Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi at the White House in mid-July. The planned meeting highlights continued engagement between Washington and Baghdad on key regional issues. The talks could influence security cooperation and the future of bilateral relations.

The announcement was made through a joint statement issued by the Iraqi prime minister’s office and the US Embassy in Baghdad. According to the statement, Special Presidential Envoy Tom Barrack conveyed Trump’s eagerness to welcome Al-Zaidi to Washington. Both sides described the relationship as important and underscored the value of continued dialogue.

The invitation comes during Barrack’s visit to the Iraqi capital, where he met senior Iraqi officials. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation and addressing pressing security concerns. Officials also reviewed developments affecting regional stability and Iraq’s long-term security priorities.

A major topic during the meetings involved armed groups operating outside state authority. Iraqi and US officials discussed efforts aimed at disarming and dissolving such groups. The issue remains central to Baghdad’s attempts to strengthen state institutions and reinforce government control across the country.

The upcoming White House meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for both leaders to discuss broader strategic cooperation. Analysts will closely watch the talks for signals on security policy, economic engagement, and regional diplomacy. Further details about the agenda are expected ahead of Al-Zaidi’s visit next month.
