Authorities in Jhang have formed a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to further probe the death case of 17-year-old student Eshal Fatima, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation.
According to police officials, senior representatives from the Punjab Police and the prosecution department recently held a high-level meeting to review progress in the case before the formation of the JIT. The team will operate under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police (SP) Investigation and includes multiple senior officers from different police wings.
The JIT comprises the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) City, DSP Saddar, DSP Investigation, along with station house officers from Saddar Kotwali and Satellite Town police stations, as well as the investigating officer already assigned to the case. Authorities said the formation of a multi-level team reflects the seriousness of the inquiry and aims to ensure a more coordinated investigation.
Police have confirmed that all four suspects have now been formally nominated in the case following a request by the complainant. Officials also stated that additional legal sections related to rape have been incorporated into the FIR at the complainant’s request, further expanding the scope of the investigation.
Eshal Fatima, a 17-year-old first-year college student from Sultan Colony in Satellite Town, Jhang, was reported missing on June 4, 2026. She was later found unconscious at a private hospital on June 7 and died the same day at DHQ Hospital Jhang.
The case has triggered widespread concern and public attention, with calls for justice and stronger protection mechanisms for young women across the country. Her family has described her as a bright and peaceful student with no known disputes or personal conflicts.
Preliminary post-mortem findings indicated no evidence of sexual assault or physical torture, while investigators suspect possible involvement of a toxic or intoxicating substance. Forensic samples have been sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency in Lahore for further analysis.
Authorities have reiterated that the investigation is ongoing and that all possible angles are being examined to determine the exact circumstances surrounding her death.
