Pakistan has called for urgent and practical measures to safeguard marine resources and protect, highlighting growing concerns over pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss.

In a message issued on World Oceans Day, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry stressed that oceans are not only environmental systems but also essential for sustaining life on Earth. He warned that increasing environmental pressures are threatening marine ecosystems and coastal communities.

The minister pointed to marine pollution as a major challenge, noting that waste dumping, industrial discharge and plastic contamination continue to damage sea life and coastal environments. He said the government is working to strengthen waste management systems in order to reduce the flow of pollutants into marine areas.
Climate change was also identified as a significant threat, with rising sea temperatures and changing weather patterns affecting marine biodiversity and coastal stability. The minister emphasized that developing countries like Pakistan face additional difficulties due to limited financial resources and vulnerability to coastal risks.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to restore marine ecosystems, including large-scale mangrove plantation projects that play an important role in protecting coastlines, supporting biodiversity and improving environmental resilience. According to the minister, such initiatives are essential for long-term ecological sustainability.
Junaid Anwar Chaudhry also stressed the importance of public awareness and community participation in marine conservation efforts. He said young people are being actively engaged in campaigns aimed at promoting environmental responsibility and protecting ocean resources for future generations.
The minister called for stronger global cooperation to address marine pollution and climate-related threats, urging both national and international stakeholders to accelerate conservation efforts. He said oceans are vital for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring the survival of life on the planet.

Officials reiterated that protecting marine environments is not only an environmental priority but also a critical economic and humanitarian necessity for coastal nations like Pakistan.
