Punjab Unveils Interest-Free E-Bike and E-Taxi Scheme for Youth

The Punjab government has announced plans to launch an electric bike rental service, introducing a new eco-friendly transportation option aimed at reducing traffic congestion, fuel costs and environmental pollution across the province.

The initiative, which will be introduced in phases, will begin with the deployment of 10,000 electric bikes. Authorities also plan to establish 300 docking and charging stations to support the service and ensure convenient access for commuters.

According to officials, the project is designed to improve urban mobility by connecting residential neighborhoods with commercial districts and public transport hubs. The service is expected to provide an affordable travel alternative for students, office workers and other daily commuters.

The Punjab Housing Authority (PHA) will allocate land for the installation of docking and charging stations, while the project will be implemented in collaboration with several government institutions, including the Lahore Parking Company (LePark), the Transport Department and Safe City authorities.

Users will be able to rent electric bikes through a dedicated mobile application, allowing them to locate, unlock and return bikes through a digital platform. Officials believe the app-based system will make the service accessible and convenient for a wide range of users.

The provincial government says the initiative is part of broader efforts to promote sustainable transportation and address environmental challenges, particularly air pollution and smog in Lahore. Authorities estimate that the project could help reduce carbon emissions by thousands of tonnes each year by encouraging a shift away from conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

Housing Department officials said the service is expected to ease pressure on road networks by providing a practical solution for short-distance travel. Reduced dependence on private vehicles could also help lower transportation costs for residents.

The e-bike rental programme represents one of Punjab’s latest efforts to modernise urban transport infrastructure while supporting environmental goals. Further details regarding rental charges, operational areas and the project’s launch date are expected to be announced in the coming months.
