NDMA warns of road blockages from landslides in northern areas

Published on: June 2, 2026 8:40 PM

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a landslide alert for northern Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), warning of heightened risks from June 2 to June 6. The advisory comes amid persistent rainfall and accelerating glacier melt, which officials say could trigger dangerous travel disruptions in mountainous areas.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), continuous rains between June 2 and June 5 are expected to increase landslide risks across several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Moreover, affected areas include Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and Haripur, where vulnerable slopes may become unstable.

The authority further identified key transport routes as highly exposed to landslide threats during the forecast period. These include the Lowari Tunnel route, Chitral-Dir Road, Swat Valley road network, Karakoram Highway, and Naran-Kaghan Road, where traffic disruptions and road blockages are likely if conditions worsen.

In addition, NDMA warned that Azad Jammu and Kashmir may face continued landslide risks from June 2 to June 6. Connectivity routes leading to Shahi, Sharda, Athmuqam, and Arang Kel could experience temporary closures, especially in areas where heavy rainfall intensifies stream flow and weakens slopes.

Meanwhile, NEOC reported that increased rainfall in upper catchment regions may cause sudden rises in water levels of streams and nullahs. As a result, hazardous travel conditions could develop, forcing authorities to implement temporary road closures in sensitive mountainous zones.

The NDMA has already issued advance alerts to federal, provincial, and local authorities, urging them to remain prepared for emergency response. Furthermore, tourists and commuters have been advised to check weather updates and road conditions before travelling, while also using the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” app for real-time safety information.
