France has officially banned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering French territory following growing international criticism over his conduct during the detention of Gaza aid activists. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced the decision on Saturday and linked it directly to increasing global anger surrounding the treatment of a humanitarian flotilla intercepted near Gaza. The move marks one of the strongest diplomatic actions taken by a major European country against an Israeli cabinet minister.
Barrot stated that the French government wanted the European Union to consider wider sanctions against Ben-Gvir in response to the controversial incident involving detained activists. Alongside Italy, France pushed for a coordinated European response after footage emerged showing Ben-Gvir mocking activists who were pinned to the ground during detention. Consequently, the incident intensified diplomatic pressure on Israel from several Western governments already concerned about tensions surrounding Gaza.

The controversy erupted after activists attempted to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza aboard vessels later intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters earlier this week. Some activists later claimed Israeli authorities physically assaulted them during detention, although Israel’s prison service strongly denied those allegations. Meanwhile, the detained individuals have since been deported from Israel following the completion of security and immigration procedures.
Significantly, Ben-Gvir also faced criticism from within Israel, including a rare public rebuke from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the minister’s actions and statements. Netanyahu reportedly described Ben-Gvir’s behaviour as inconsistent with Israel’s national values and political standards during a sensitive international situation. Furthermore, the United States, Israel’s closest ally, also expressed disapproval over the incident and the minister’s conduct toward the activists.

The diplomatic fallout reflects widening divisions between Israel and several Western governments over the handling of humanitarian issues connected to the Gaza conflict. European leaders increasingly fear that aggressive responses toward aid missions and activists could further damage regional stability and increase international tensions. At the same time, France’s decision may encourage additional European countries to adopt stronger measures against controversial Israeli officials.
Meanwhile, Ben-Gvir’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding France’s entry ban and proposed European sanctions. Political analysts believe the dispute could deepen existing diplomatic strains between Israel and European nations already critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza. As international scrutiny continues to grow, the latest controversy has placed renewed attention on the treatment of activists and humanitarian missions in the region.
