Shan Masood may step down after Bangladesh series loss

Shan Masood apologises after series loss to Bangladesh, calls for revamping Pakistan cricket

Shan Masood is reportedly considering stepping down as captain of the Pakistan national cricket team following the team’s disappointing Test series defeat against Bangladesh national cricket team.

According to sources, the Pakistan Test captain has been deeply affected by the criticism surrounding the team’s recent performances and may resign from the leadership role after the 2-0 series defeat in Bangladesh.

Shan Masood, who was appointed Pakistan’s Test captain in December 2023, has faced mounting pressure due to the team’s inconsistent results. Under his leadership, Pakistan have played 16 Test matches, winning only four while losing 12.

The latest setback came in Sylhet, where Pakistan were defeated by 78 runs in the second Test while chasing a target of 437. Despite a fighting effort led by Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan were bowled out for 358, allowing Bangladesh to complete a historic series whitewash.

The defeat also further damaged Pakistan’s standing in the ICC World Test Championship rankings and intensified criticism over the team’s performances in red-ball cricket.

Bangladesh’s victory marked another major achievement for the hosts, who had previously whitewashed Pakistan during their 2024 tour of Pakistan. The latest result has added to concerns regarding Pakistan’s batting consistency, bowling discipline, and overall leadership strategy in Test cricket.

While no official statement has yet been issued by Shan Masood or the Pakistan Cricket Board regarding a possible resignation, discussions surrounding the future of the Test captaincy have gained momentum following the series loss.

Cricket analysts and former players have also questioned Pakistan’s long-term planning and team selection after another disappointing overseas performance.

The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to review the team’s recent performances and leadership structure in the coming weeks as preparations continue for future international assignments.
