Cuba warns US military action could trigger ‘bloodbath’

Cuba Warns U.S. Military Action Would Trigger 'Bloodbath' - Modern Diplomacy

Cuba has warned that any United States (US) military action against the country would lead to a “bloodbath,” sharply escalating tensions between Havana and Washington after recent reports alleging Cuban military drone capabilities.

The warning was issued by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who said in a post on X that Cuba does not pose a threat to the United States and would defend itself if attacked.

The statement came in response to an Axios report citing classified intelligence claims that Cuba has acquired more than 300 military drones and may have considered using them against US targets, including the Guantanamo Bay naval base, US military vessels, and parts of Florida such as Key West.

Cuban officials have rejected the allegations, calling them fabricated and accusing Washington of using such reports to justify potential military intervention and increased pressure on the island nation.

In his remarks, Díaz-Canel said any US attack would have “incalculable consequences” for regional peace and stability, reinforcing Cuba’s position that it has the right to self-defence under international law.

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla also defended the country’s position, stating that all nations have the right to protect themselves against external aggression under the United Nations Charter.

The comments come amid already heightened tensions between the two countries, with relations strained by long-standing sanctions, energy shortages in Cuba, and renewed US pressure on Havana’s leadership.

Recent developments have also included reports of possible US legal action against former Cuban officials over past incidents, further deepening diplomatic friction.

Despite economic hardship and internal challenges, Cuban citizens quoted in local media have expressed readiness to resist any foreign attack, while others have called for dialogue to avoid further escalation.

US officials have not publicly confirmed any imminent military action but have expressed concern over Cuba’s reported drone capabilities.

The situation remains highly volatile, with both sides accusing each other of provocation while signalling readiness to respond if conflict escalates.
