Punjab CM unveils new online harassment system for women safety

Published on: May 12, 2026 7:08 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a new system to combat online harassment and digital bullying, stressing zero tolerance for abuse against women across the province. She made the announcement while addressing a ceremony at Lahore College for Women University, where she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making Punjab safer and more inclusive for women. Consequently, she outlined strict enforcement measures against offenders.

Maryam Nawaz said authorities would not tolerate harassment cases and promised swift action against individuals targeting women online or offline. She emphasized that complainants’ identities would remain strictly confidential under the new reporting system to encourage more victims to come forward. Moreover, she urged parents to actively support daughters who report harassment instead of ignoring their concerns.

In addition, the chief minister proposed panic buttons and virtual support centres to ensure immediate protection and assistance for women facing threats. She said the new online system would strengthen digital safety frameworks and improve response time for complaints. Therefore, the government aims to build a more responsive and secure environment for women across Punjab.

Maryam Nawaz highlighted women’s growing role in governance, noting that they now serve as divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, and district police officers in Punjab. Furthermore, she said women are also part of the provincial cabinet, reflecting progress in gender inclusion in leadership roles. She added that women’s participation strengthens institutional performance and public service delivery.

Moving to development initiatives, she said the government has completed 100,000 houses under the housing programme and awarded merit scholarships to 100,000 students. Additionally, she announced plans for 100,000 electric bikes, new sports gymnasiums, AI centres, and computer labs to support youth development. Consequently, she said equal educational access is being ensured for children from all backgrounds.

Finally, Maryam Nawaz spoke about governance, national unity, and her personal political journey, saying she remained committed through difficult challenges and criticism. She claimed Pakistan is now playing a diplomatic role in international matters and credited leadership cooperation for stabilizing energy supply during global tensions. Ultimately, she stressed that collective effort and responsibility drive national progress.
