The Pakistan Embassy in Cambodia has successfully negotiated the early repatriation of 54 Pakistani nationals detained in Siem Reap province, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Tuesday.
The individuals, arrested in connection with a raid on a scam operation, will be flown back to Pakistan as soon as flight arrangements are finalized, the FO spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said in a statement.
He confirmed that the Embassy’s efforts were in alignment with directives from Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister to ensure the welfare of the Pakistani community abroad.
“The Cambodian authorities have agreed to release the detainees without any legal proceedings under Cambodia’s new ‘Law on Combating Online Scams,’ which was enforced on 7 April 2026, imposing significant penalties,” Andrabi said.
The detainees are expected to leave Cambodia promptly, marking a swift resolution to the matter, thanks to the Embassy’s intervention.
Separately, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has written to the Somali ambassador, seeking assistance for the safe return of the Pakistani crew aboard the vessel Honor 25.
The maritime minister wrote the letter as diplomatic efforts have been intensified to secure the safe release of Pakistani crew members taken hostage after a pirate attack on an oil tanker near Somalia.
The minister expressed “deep concern” over the safety of the Pakistani crew, saying all possible measures were being taken to ensure their protection.
Pirates attacked and seized an oil tanker near the coast of Somalia last week, taking hostage a vessel carrying 11 Pakistani crew members.
The Somalia’s foreign ministry said the situation was being closely monitored, adding that details related to the ship and Pakistani nationals had been shared with relevant national security institutions.
The Somali authorities assured that Pakistan would be promptly informed of any developments regarding the vessel and its crew.
Taking notice of the incident, Junaid on April 24 directed all relevant institutions to make the rescue operation more effective.
According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, all concerned departments were in constant coordination and closely monitoring the situation.
