Pakistan’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved the export of donkey meat and hides to China as part of efforts to expand trade and utilise livestock resources more effectively.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb in Islamabad. Officials said the move aims to tap into international demand for donkey-derived products, particularly in markets where such items are used in food and traditional industries.

During the meeting, the committee also reviewed the country’s economic situation and expressed satisfaction over a reported decline in inflation and relative price stability. Members discussed various policy measures intended to support economic activity and improve trade performance.

In addition to approving exports, the ECC allowed the temporary import of vehicles and auto parts, a move expected to facilitate industrial and commercial operations. The committee also imposed a ban on the import of goods produced through forced labour, aligning with international compliance standards.

Officials noted that exporting donkey meat and hides could generate additional revenue and create opportunities in the livestock sector, provided that regulatory standards and quality controls are strictly followed.

The meeting also approved a special incentives package for officers serving in Balochistan, aimed at improving administrative efficiency in the province. Furthermore, financial allocations were made for different sectors, including a Rs30 million reward for the national hockey team and over Rs370 million for digital transformation initiatives within accountability institutions.

Economic analysts say the approval reflects a broader strategy to diversify Pakistan’s export base and explore niche markets. However, they stress the importance of maintaining transparency, hygiene standards, and proper monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance with international trade regulations.

The government is expected to issue detailed guidelines regarding the export process, including licensing, inspection protocols, and supply chain management, before shipments begin.
