Trump proposes record $1.5 trillion defense budget expansion

Published on: April 22, 2026 4:13 PM

President Donald Trump has proposed a massive $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal year 2027, marking the largest year-to-year increase in military spending since the end of World War II. The plan, unveiled by the United States Department of Defense, includes major investments in ships, aircraft, missile defense and advanced technologies aimed at strengthening America’s military capabilities.

A major feature of the budget is a new category called “presidential priorities,” which focuses on projects such as the Golden Dome missile defense system, drone warfare dominance, artificial intelligence programs and improved military data infrastructure. Pentagon officials say these initiatives are designed to modernize defense capabilities and ensure the United States maintains technological superiority in future conflicts.

Meanwhile, naval expansion forms a key part of the proposal, with more than $65 billion allocated to procure 18 warships and 16 support vessels under the “Golden Fleet” initiative. These ships will be built by General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries, representing the largest US shipbuilding request since 1962 and reflecting Washington’s growing focus on maritime strength.

The budget also boosts aircraft procurement, increasing annual purchases of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jets to 85 units while allocating $102 billion for aircraft programs and research. In addition, $6.1 billion has been requested for the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider stealth bomber, while development continues for the next-generation Boeing F-47 fighter jet.

Drone warfare receives unprecedented attention as well, with $53.6 billion proposed for autonomous drone platforms and battlefield logistics. Another $21 billion will support advanced munitions and counter-drone technologies, while the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group’s funding would surge from roughly $225 million to about $54 billion to expand real-world battlefield capabilities.

In addition, the proposal includes military pay raises and expansion of armed forces personnel. Junior enlisted troops would receive a seven percent salary increase, while the military would grow by 44,000 service members in 2027 after adding more than 20,000 the previous year, although the budget does not yet include funding related to any potential conflict with Iran.
